Screen blanks out

I open a picture in Photoshop CS2, then go to apply filter, selecting NeatImage/Reduce Noise When I apply the filters the picture goes away and I am staring at a blank Photoshop screen (all gray). If I minimize Photoshop and then bring it back the picture is present but I am not sure if anything was applied. Hope someone can help me with this.
Also I thought I had a luminescence side bar tool but don't see it anymore or was I imagining things?? Am new at this, and use an Olympus E500 camera, and have not installed any of the filter sets for this camera.
