At least try compressed PNG - not lossy. Not as small as JPG, but can be quite a bit smaller than BMP. I use the ALL filtering option which almost always results in the smallest filesize. I've also had good luck with the lossless JPEG2000 - though that requires that a viewer have a JPEG2K plugin for their browser of choice (I've used Morgan's for both Firefox/Netscape, and Internut Exploiter.
