What are the unintended consequences of applying the Neat Image filter?
Specifically, I've read several newsgroup posts that say it softens the image. That is, the natural image sharpness is degraded. Is this true?
I am also interested in any other side effects.
Side Effects of Applying Neat Image
What is "natural image sharpness"?
Regarding the image sharpness in general, Neat Image does not reduce it when correctly applied. BTW, this is a good criteria - if you lose image sharpness this most likely means you do something wrong.
An interesting side efffect is reduction in file size when JPEG compression is used. JPEG better compresses less noisy images.
When a 24-bit image is filtered and 48-bit output is produced, the histogramm of the resulting image looks better.
